Virris and his twin brother, Kester, were born in the city of Zoryn in Essodan in 79EA. Their earliest memories are not of their mother, but of their father, Strakamir packing them and the few belongings they could carry into a wagon, hitching up horses, and leaving Zoryn by the light of the red moon. Until recently, Strakimir has never said more about her than that she was a beautiful elven girl, one whose arrival in his life was the result of his unusual luck, and whose disappearance was the reason they left Zoryn.
Thinking that the most opportunities lie in the booming frontier town of Kingsmark, Strakimir moved the family in 92EA. Restless teens of 13, the twins found the town of Kingsmark much more suitable to their disposition, especially Kester. More charismatic and wayward, Kester was frequently the one to find trouble, always to the chagrin of upright Virris and to the amusement of their father.
About ten years ago, the brothers had followed the river the few miles downstream toward the wastes, and set to climbing an old ruin they had often scaled in their youth. By the time they climbed down to the valley floor again, three men waited for them. Their leader introduced himself as Assalka Khoulah.
Virris returned the next day alone to bring supplies, his brother restlessly refusing to be a part of such a hassle for fewer coins than their father would pay. Full of questions about who they were and where they came from, Assalka explained in part: they were Wardens of Sallah.
He described the order as knights, holy warriors who served Vigilance in a way that most others could not. He revealed that they had come from a faraway land, and that the building formed in the rock above had been there long before Kingsmark. Most shocking of all, he claimed that the men had crossed The Shadeless Wastes on foot to return to the building above which was a sort of temple for them.
Over the next few weeks, Virris would take food and supplies to them, which they paid him for very well. Assalka alone seemed to speak Tamiriyan, for the other men never spoke to Virris, and only spoke to Assalka from time to time in a smooth, flowing language. Assalka painted the picture of life as a liberator, with the strength of Vigilance granting abilities most could not understand.
Virris was eventually admitted to their temple, being shown the secret entrance hidden at the base of the cliff face. Assalka talked at length about philosophy and the idea that freedom for all was important, and that protecting that was a sacred duty to Vigilance.
Finally, one day Assalka told Virris they must leave. They would follow the river into the Wastes, then follow it northeast along the peaks to their next destination. When Virris expressed an interest in going with them, Assalka explained that the way was not one he would take an untrained person on. It was then that he bid Virris travel to Assetallis. There he should submit himself to a man named Zimit Golov for training at the Hamalaturan, the great temple of the Saramine. Zimit was secretly one of their order of knights, though he was a native Essoan. If Virris went and said he was sent by Assalka, he would be taught all he needed to know.
Years of study and martial training prepared Virris for his eventually return. His first stop was to Kingsmark to make certain the temple there was intact. From there, he was bid to operate independently as most Wardens did, seeking out those in need in liberation from oppression.
When Virris returned in early spring of 112EA, the tension between the brothers and their differing ideas continued to grow. That seemed to be pushed to the back when they were drawn into the tragedy of Ksenja Bravich and the unplanned life as members of the Red Stone Mercenary Company that followed.
